In our new Transfer Time format, we look at Wesley Sneijder and Manchester United, Juventus pulling a massive coup and all the troubles at Arsenal. Not to be missed!

The Transfer Window continues to throw up surprises as it ‘officially’ opened on July 1st late last week. Check out some of the hot stories going around in our newly structured format that covers all corners of the globe.

Stop... have Juve pulled of one of the biggest coups this window?

Our Pick

Juventus Swoop for Sergio

There are rumours coming out of Italy that Juventus are on the verge of a huge signing in Atletico Madrid striker, Sergio Aguero. The Argentine has been linked to cross town rivals Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester City, however, with Juventus on the cusp and needing a big season – Aguero could be the perfect catalyst. (Football Italia)

What’s Hot

United Step up Sneijder Interest

The Red Devils are reportedly turning their attention to Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder as their efforts to bring Samir Nasri to Old Trafford look to be dying. It is believed United will launch a £35 million bid to strengthen their midfield. (Daily Star)

Madrid Close to Sealing Coentrao Deal

Coentrao impressed for Portugal at last year’s World Cup and has been rumoured for a big move ever since. It appears Madrid will match Benfica’s rumoured £20 million asking price. According to Reuters, a medical is all that stands in the way of the deal going through. (Reuters)

Alvarez Snubs Arsenal for Inter

There were hot reports early in the window about Ricky Alvarez making the switch from Velez Sarsfield to Arsenal, but there are murmurs coming out of Italy that Inter have all but signed the Argentine for around £6 million with additional add-ons. (Football Italia)

Madrid Officials in Brazil to Tie up Neymar

We brought it to you a few weeks ago and now it appears that Real Madrid have sent officials over to Brazil to negotiate with the Brazilian’s agent. It’s been rumoured Madrid will offer as much as £30 million for Neymar with possible future payments depending on further terms. (Goal.com)

Chelsea Keen to Sell Mikel Obi to fund Bastos Deal

It is believed Juventus is interested in the defensive midfielder and Chelsea have been said to be interested in the deal. The London club value Mikel Obi at £15 million and it is believed Chelsea will use the money to possibly fund a transfer for Michel Bastos. (Daily Mail)

Say What?!

Tevez Wants to go, Again

Carlos Tevez has handed in another transfer request to Manchester City as he continues to struggle adapting to life in England. Roberto Mancini said last week he was confident his star striker would be at Eastlands for another year, but it seems he is keen for a move. However, City’s asking price may be a stumbling block, their valuation of Tevez is rumoured to be around £45 million. (Daily Star)

Madrid Interested in Argentine

With Tevez keen to jet out of Eastlands, La Liga expert Graham Hunter believes that Real Madrid may well be his destination. With Emmanuel Adebayor’s loan deal coming to an end and with no certainties over Higuain’s future, Real may be the only club with the funds for the deal. (Talk Sport)

What is Happening at Arsenal?

With Gael Clichy gone, there are huge fears that that a disgruntled exodus of players will follow. With Fabregas and Nasri already heavily linked as possible exits, it is believed the likes of Robin Van Persie, Theo Walcott and Andrei Arshavin may follow as Arsene Wenger faces one of the most testing times of his career. (The Telegraph)

Is Lucio Answer to Gunners’ Problems?

Negotiations have stalled between Inter and the World Cup winner, with rumours floating that Arsenal are ready to fill their defensive voids with the Brazilian. However at 33, signing Lucio may go against Arsene Wenger’s one-year contract policy for players over 30. (Fanatix)

Porto Sign Kleber, Falcao to Chelsea Gains Momentum

Andre Vilas-Boas made it no secret of his desire to bring goal-machine Falcao with him to Chelsea from Porto and the scenario looks a little more likely with Porto signing striker Kleber. If Falcao were to follow his former manager to Chelsea, it would most likely spell the end for Didier Drogba. (FIFA.com)

Rumoured News

Valencia set Banega Price Tag at £8.1 Million

Inter target Ever Banega has had an £8.1 million price slapped on his head as the Italians look to step up their interest. The 23-year old is however waiting for an EU passport after his 3-year stint in Spain. (La Gazzetta Sportiva)

Liverpool Interested in Valencia Winger

Sources are suggesting that Liverpool have launched a bid to sign Santi Cazorla from Valencia. The price is unknown at this stage, however negotiations to bring in Stuart Downing have hit a wall and it is rumoured that Kenny Dalglish is keen to tie up all transfers well before season’s start. (Mirror)

Lille, AC Keen on Chu-Young

The Korean made it clear that he was intent on forcing a move out of Monaco after his side were relegated from Ligue One. Lille and AC have reportedly met with his agent to discuss the player, with Monaco valuing Chu-Young between £5-6 million after scoring 12 goals last season. (Goal.com)

Spahic All But Signed for Sevilla

The 30-year old centre half will aim to complete a medical over the next few days after it appeared Sevilla had signed their man from Ligue One outfit, Montpellier. It was believed that Spahic favoured a move to the Premier League, but any such chances broke down. (Sky Sports)

Swansea Continue to Pursue Soriano

Newly-promoted Swansea are keen to add some firepower to their squad with the addition of Bacelona striker Jonathan Soriano. However, negotiations have stumbled with claims that the terms of the initial deal were not possible for Swansea. (Eat Sleep Sport)

PSG Linked with Lucas

French side PSG have been linked with the lesser-known Brazilian Lucas. The 18-year old is rated highly, but it seems Sao Paulo have even bigger valuations for him, rating the lad at an amazing £72 million. But backed with new and rich Qatari investors, PSG have the cash. (Sky Sports)

Navarro Quits Valencia

David Navarro and Valencia have mutually agreed to terminate the former captain’s contract which expired in 2012. It is believed Navarro is keen to link up with Swiss side Neuchatel Xamax. (The World Game)

Penrith have brought Gus Gould to the coaching team, but will will presence make the difference? Johnno is fired up and has some harsh words for the boys at the foot of the mountain! Do you agree with him?

Gus to have full control over all footballing aspects

Needs to change player attitudes and junior talent

Players need to step up and burden some blame

Big appointment... Can Gus turn it around for Penrith?

Yesterday it was confirmed that Phil Gould will join the struggling Penrith Panthers in a football director role.

Not many people were surprised given the days of speculation that built before the official announcement.

However, it will make people notice and for the Penrith side I hope it makes a difference.

But I just can’t see it.

It’s great to see Gus back in the game and I’m sure he’ll change the club around. But the players have to burden a lot of the blame.

From second to second last in one season is almost inexcusable. Yes they lost a couple of players, but no one who was a standout in the team.

Frank Pritchard and Wade Graham were the biggest loses and whilst Graham has been impressive with the Sharkies, Pritchard is back to his inconsistent form that made him famous at Penrith.

Penrith have brought in the likes of Yileen Gordon and Timana Tahu, whilst guys like Daine Laurie and Nigel Plum came with decent reputations but have failed miserably.

That’s why I found Matt Elliot’s sacking a bit strange.

People were saying he couldn’t motivate his side enough. But let’s rewind to game one when Penrith were trounced by 42-8 by Newcastle.

If you’re telling me that a team can’t get up enough about the first game of a season, at home and coming of a strong 2010, I don’t know what will.

You can’t blame that all on one guy.

However, hopefully Gus’ main impact will be with the playing group.

Some of the players seriously don’t look like they have any pride playing for Penrith and need a serious attitude change.

Penrith is probably the best location for young talent in the whole of NSW, maybe even Australia. But far too many times do we see great young players get off to a flying start, all to let their ability fall down the drain, switch clubs or codes even.

Look at players like Luke Rooney, Peter Wallace, Graham, Geoff Daniella, Shane Rodney, Luke Swain.

They’re all great players, who left Penrith for one reason or another.

But the question is, why?

One aspect points to the club culture. There has been quite a bit of unrest, players like Trent Waterhouse and Michael Jennings coming out in the public and commenting on their worries regarding issues like the next coach, wages and players.

You can only hope, if you were a Penrith supporter, that Gus is able to change this around and drive a new winning-mentality into all the players at the club.

And quite frankly, there just isn’t enough young players stepping up to the first team at the moment. None that wouldn’t get destroyed in the NRL anyways.

Gus needs to show every player the old tapes of Royce Simmons, Mark Geyer, Scott Sattler, Martin Lang, Craig Gower, Rhys Wesser, Greg Alexander – and the passion they had for the jersey and the club.

The fans deserve much better than what they’re getting at the moment. Get rid of the wannabes who play half-heartedly and just want their pay check. Bring in some people who are ready to transform this club.

It’s what Penrith need and if Gus can’t bring that in, I’m not sure who else can.

Jose Mourinho is back to his best, claiming no side will ever have the 'chance' of beating Barcelona after his side's 2-0 home loss in the Champions League. So we've compiled some evidence for the special one. Do you think he has a point? Or has he lost the plot again?

Mourinho says no team has fair chance against Barca

Controversial Barca games give some evidence

Barca consider legal action

They’re pretty bloody good! But surely everyone has that little voice in their head after the ‘special one’s’ latest comments.

After their 2-0 away win at Real Madrid this morning, Barca put one foot in the door of what could be another UCL final with Manchester United.

However, it was Madrid’s coach, the one-in-a-million, Jose Mourinho who stole the limelight with some classic post-match quotes.

The former Inter, Chelsea and Porto man claimed that he hoped one day Barcelona would win the Champions League ‘properly’.

The comments came after a Pepe straight red card saw Barcelona take full advantage slotting two goals after the dismissal.

It must be said, it was a yellow card tackle at best.

Mourinho felt teams have next to no chance of beating Barca in the Champions League. He noted, in particularly, Chelsea’s loss in the semi to Barca a few seasons back and also Arsenal’s quarter-final exit earlier this year.

“No-one else has any chance really. Arsène Wenger. Today myself. I don’t understand why. I hope one day I will find the answer.”

He even went as far as wondering whether Barca’s shirt partner UNICEF was a reason for their ‘power’ in world football.

“It must be difficult to get all this power. Where does this power come from? I don’t know if it’s because they give UNICEF publicity (on their shirts)?”

Barca are now considering taking legal action against Mourinho as his comments start to spread.

However, when one looks back at some of the, let’s say ‘controversial’, games Barca have been involved with in the Champions League in recent times, there is a slight sense of intrigue.

2004-5: Barcelona v Chelsea (Second Round – 1st Leg)

Barcelona defeated Chelsea 2-1 at the Nou Camp this game. However, Chelsea led 1-0 until Didier Drogba was sent off for a challenge on Victor Valdes. Replays showed he pulled out and the challenge was quite minimal. Claims emerged that Frank Rijkaard, Barca manager at the time, had met the referee, Anders Frisk, during half time of the game – something strictly prohibited in FIFA laws. The meeting was confirmed and the Frisk retired weeks later.

2008-9: Chelsea v Barcelona (Semi Final – 2nd Leg)

As much as I enjoy seeing Chelsea lose, they were robbed hardcore in this game. They could have easily had four penalties in this game, but got none. Add Iniesta’s late strike to the occasion and Barca went through by the skin of their teeth. How the ref missed some of the decisions no one will ever know.

2009-10: Barcelona v Inter Milan (Semi Final – 2nd Leg)

Inter actually won this game last year to get to the final, but it was Thiago Motta’s red card that nearly saw them exit the competition. A challenge on Sergio Busquets in the first half resulted in the red and some farcical scenes at the Nou Camp. Motta did raise his hand but contact was minimal. Busquets getting treatment after it was absolutely ridiculous though. Make what you want out of this one!

2010-11: Barcelona v Arsenal (Second Round – 2nd Leg)

Arsenal held a 2-1 aggregate lead from the first leg heading to the Nou Camp. However, after Arsenal much like Chelsea got the lead, ref Massimo Busacca proceeded to send off Robin Van Persie for a second yellow card for kicking the ball away. The Dutchman pleaded his case, noting the boisterous noise inside the stadium meant he didn’t hear the whistle; there weren’t even appeals from the Barca players. But he got red and the rest is history.

Those are just some thoughts for you to chew on. Are Barcelona cheats? No. Are they lucky? Yes.

No one can deny their ability to play football, but one does wonder about their reputation after such games.

As Round 2 of the 2011 NRL season begins tomorrow, we bring you up to speed on how all the teams sit after one round. How did your team go and how does the future look? Johnno reports.

It was a historic start to the 2011 NRL season, with the largest ever number through the gates in Round 1.

So it was a record breaking round for this wonderful game as we entered the 2011 season with the highest ever attendance for an opening round of an NRL season.

And they say this game was dead.

There were comebacks, tension, controversies and thrashings, all the ingredients for a super first round.

But just how did your team do? We’ll have a look on how they went and were they sit after round one.

–

1st – Newcastle Knights (2, +34)

Rating: 7.5/10

Yes they played against a poor team, but one has to say the Knights do look quite the polished outfit in 2011. They completed most of their sets and dropped very little ball. Jarrod Mullen looks a player reborn after a quite 2010, marshalling the Knights around the paddock. Unfortunately the toll of their win is expensive, with De Gois and new boy Neville Costigan facing lengthy injury layoffs.

2nd – Canberra Raiders (2, +28)

Rating: 7/10

Like Newcastle, faced a very jaded opponent, but didn’t let that stop them from putting on a show. Some of the young talent down at the capital is amazing, Jarrod Crocker among the standouts. With David Campese, Matt Orford and gun fullback Josh Dugan yet to play, this could well be a big year for the Raiders. The loss of inspirational skipper Alan Tongue will be the biggest loss.

3rd – Melbourne Storm (2, +12)

Rating: 7/10

It was a composed performance that allowed the Storm to beat rivals Manly in round one. Again, it was a bunch of youngsters who impressed, with the likes of recruit Chase Stanley impressive, the catch being he’s gone for the season with injury. The Melbournians have something to prove this season after the horror of 2010, and when this machine starts firing on all cylinders, watch out.

Roosters dominated but nearlly lost.

4th – Sydney Roosters (2, +11)

Rating: 7.5/10

Despite the 20-minute period in the second half, the Roosters showed no signs of letting go the form they created last year. They lost concentration for that period and nearly threw it away, but in the end it was a deserved victory for the Roosters. They’ll have to improve their scrambling defence which was weak in certain periods, but in attack they look quite an impressive unit.

5th – Canterbury Bulldogs (2, +10)

Rating: 8.5/10

The Doggies invested heavily in the offseason to make up for a bitterly disappointing 2010. But it was all worth it as the new-look side made upset the Tigers. Franky Pritchard and Kris Keating both scored on debut and Bryce Goodwin looks to have finally solved the Bulldogs goal kicking woes since Hazem retired. The loss of Josh Morris is a big blow, but the big test will now be if they can back up after such an impressive performance.

6th – St. George Illawarra Dragons (2, +9)

Rating: 8/10

The trip up to Skilled is one of the toughest in the NRL, so for the Dragons to come away with the points is a great result. Not only that, but they should zero signs of second year syndrome and really dominated the game in honesty. Yes, you can talk about that controversial try, but that shouldn’t deny the dominance from the Champions. Soward and the boys are back. But then again, they never really left.

7th – Parramatta Eels (2, +6)

Rating: 9/10

If the trip to Skilled is one of the hardest in the NRL, surely the road trip across the ditch is the hardest. Facing a boisterous Eden Park crowd and a team being touted as possible 2011 Premiers, the Eels let not of that get in the way as they impressed in many areas. Perhaps the most notable thing was that the Hayne Train barely oiled the engines. They have a nice blend this year of youth and experience. Probably the most outstanding performance of round one.

8th – North Queensland Cowboys (2, +2)

Rating: 7/10

The impressive Cowboys shocked the collective crowd at Suncorp last Friday as they defeated the Broncos. Perhaps the most concerning thing for Neil Henry was the Broncos ability to get back into the game after his side led 16-2 at half time. Matty Bowen showed glimpses of his old self in attack and young James Tamou looks to have put a poor 2010 behind him. JT is JT. However, they can’t afford to switch off like they did in the future.

9th – Brisbane Broncos (0, -2)

Rating: 6.5/10

Big Manu Injured........... Again.

Looked a little lacklustre in attack at times, but must be given props for nearly resurrecting the game in the second half. Darren Lockyer said the occasion got to his team, and he’s probably right. Massive crowd, first game of the season, passionate rivals. All this for one of the most inexperienced Brisbane side in years was a bit too much for them to handle.

10th – NZ Warriors (0, -6)

Rating: 6/10

The Warriors were similar to the Broncos as they let the occasion get to them somewhat, all to mount a late rally. Jerome Ropati scored two good tries, but one feels Krisnan Inu (who will play this week), might have been a better choice on the wing, especially up against his old side. Feleti Mateo off the bench was a massive fail though. Play the guy from the get go! Big Manu Vatuvei is out for eight weeks too, ouch.

11th – Gold Coast Titans (0, -9)

Rating: 6.5/10

Not a bad performance from the Titans, when you consider the opponent and the fact people gave them almost no hope, even at home. If you’re critical or simply a Titans fan you’ll say the ref-try-incident cost you the game, maybe it did? Zillman was always getting to the ball and he’s got some pace so we wouldn’t have ruled out a 100m burst from the young lad! But, there were positives to take from the match, including an eye catching performance from Scott Prince.

12th – Wests Tigers (0, -10)

Rating: 6/10

The biggest highlight from their game against Canterbury will be Benji Marshall. Some are saying Frank Pritchard stole the show, but have the Tigers won the game, praises would be laid on this man. Two great passes for tries before sidestepping his way for another, he was good without being great. Rob Lui was poor though and that will be the biggest test, working out the combination between 6 and 7.

13th – Rabbitohs (0, -11)

Rating: 5/10

You might think that rating is a tad low, but in honesty, besides their second half resurgence they were poor. In the first half they were hard to watch and again this much-maligned pack had no answer to the Roosters forwards. Greg Inglis was OK and will need time to settle, but really, in all the Rabbitohs were dominated. They need a new attitude and need to understand buying big doesn’t mean results. Remember, they have the most members to please.

14th – Manly Sea Eagles (0, -12)

Rating: 5/10

Many will be disappointed with the performance by Manly against Melbourne. They had a real chance to head over to AAMI Stadium and come away with a precious two points but they never looked likely. Add to that injury and suspension woes to Jamie Lyon and captain King, all of a sudden Manly are really struggling. With Steve Matai out till round five, they already lack depth in those crucial centre positions.

15th – Cronulla Sharks (0, -28)

Rating: 3/10

Can Timana saved the ailing Panthers?

After a bright start against Canberra, there was some hope that Cronulla may have moved on from last season’s woes. But how could we be wrong. Some of the football on show after the first ten minutes was 2010 stuff, if not worse. Albert Kelly was stretchered off and Paul Aiton was the first player of 2011 sent off. Without Josh Gardner, this would have been worse. It seems just a matter of time before the talented fullback moves on.

16th – Penrith Panthers (0, -34)

Rating: 1/10

Penrith’s round one performance against the Knights had to be one of the worst ever in the history of the game. The Knights don’t have a team that should have scared Penrith, but it looked like they just graduated from primary school to high school. Drop ball, incomplete sets, poor work ethic. With a team harbouring test and state players, that simply isn’t good enough. Period. The addition of Timana Tahu might help, but will he ultimately change such performances? Doubt it.

–

So what did you make of your team’s first round efforts? Here’s who they’ll face in round 2:

It's been a dramatic first set of ties in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16, Arsenal highlighting a quite remarkable few days with an amazing late show to defeat Barcelona.

The first four Round of 16 ties in the UEFA Champions League we’re played today and yesterday and showcased why this competition is the best display of football in the world.

The results included

Tuesday, 17th February 2011

AC Milan 0-1 Tottenham
Valencia 1-1 Schalke

Wednesday, 18th February 2011

Arsenal 2-1 Barcelona
Roma 2-3 Shakhtar Donetsk

Arguably one of the most remarkable ties of this year’s UCL came at the Emirates Stadium as Arsenal, on the back foot for most of the match, staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Spanish Champions Barcelona 2-1.

Delight... Andrei Arshavin gave Arsenal an epic win over Barcelona.

In a game which emphasized what possession meant, it was Barcelona who unsurprisingly dominated much of that statistic in the first half.

Messi, who is still without a goal in England, laid on an assist for the opener, as he played in David Villa, the Spanish striker finishing smartly through Szczesny’s legs.

But Arsenal came out with intent in the second half.

However, it took them till the 78th minute to find the equaliser, as Clichy lobbed in van Persie who, with arguably his toughest chance of the game, drilled past Valdes in goal.

Suddenly Arsenal was on the front foot, and just five minutes later relief turned to jubilation.

Samir Nasri burst through the right channel and squared up Arshavin who finished with class.

It sets up what should be a wonderful second leg at the Nou Camp in three weeks.

Meanwhile in the days other game, Roma were booed off as they lost 3-2 at home to Ukrainians Shakhtar Donetsk.

Things looked good at the start for the Italians as Perrotta ghosted in at the back post to finish well with his head, giving his side a comfortable lead.

It only lasted one minute.

In another quite amazing turnaround, Shakhtar went goal crazy.

First it was Jadson’s deflected strike which levelled the scores in the 29th minute. Then a quite wonderful goal from Costa and an Adriano strike put Shakhtar in the most wonderful of positions.

Not only were they winning, but had three precious away goals by half time.

Roma needed to get back into the game and they did exactly that when Menez popped up to provide the slightest hope.

But that was as good as it got for them with the Italians now facing the daunting task of having to score at least two goals at Shakhtar to go through.

On Tuesday, the shock result was Tottenham’s 1-0 win over a poor Milan side.

As the Spurs UCL fairytale continues to role on, it was Peter Crouch who scored (with his feet if you can believe), to give Tottenham the edge.

It was a game surprisingly dominated by Tottenham, as Milan attacked mainly on the counter.

Gattuso could face a lengthy UEFA ban.

The talking point was left to hard edged midfielder Gennaro Gattuso, the midfielder going toe-to-toe with one of the Spur’s coaching staff at the end of the game, which will certainly lead to some sort of sanction from UEFA.

It also left Tottenham with the Milan double, having beaten Inter at White Heart Lane in the Group Stage as well.

The other game on Tuesday was at Valencia as Raul added to his resume by becoming the sole top scorer in the UEFA Champions League.

It was Valencia however, who got the lead.

Soldado it was who pounced with a delightful finish to put his side up 1-0.

But not to be denied it was Raul, showcasing his full talent by cushioning the ball with his first touch and then slotting away with poise and elegance to claim an important draw for Schalke to take back to Germany.

Next week sees Chelsea travel to Kobenhaven and Real Madrid travel to Lyon in a tricky tie on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, Manchester United visit Marseille, whilst we also have the much anticipated grand final replay from last season as Bayern Munich take on Inter Milan at the San Siro.
