Speaking before England’s 2-1 win over Denmark, boss Fabio Capello came out yesterday lamenting the lack of English talent in the Premier League being the main reason for the three lions’ poor form of late.
After only picking up one win out of four games during a disappointing World Cup last year, England have now won four out of their six internationals since the tournament.
However, out of those six games, only one team (France) is in the top 20 of the FIFA world rankings. It also involved a poor nil-all draw with Montenegro in the 2012 Euro Qualifiers.
And Capello blamed such form on the Premier League’s lack of home grown ability.
“Selection of the players is not so easy as the other countries,” he said.
“The Premier League (is made up of) only 33 per cent of English players. In Spain (it’s) 70 (per cent), France 76, Germany more, 70, Italy 78,”
However, Danish keeper Tomas Sorensen, beaten twice against the English, believes the three lions just underperform on the international front.
“England have always had really good players, absolutely world class,” he said.
“(But) never seem to deliver what people, and themselves, expect.”
There is an air of hypocrisy surrounding the former Real Madrid coach, the Italian saying after the game that he was now ‘spoiled for choice’ when it came to his squad of players.
Time to go Fabio? I think so indeed.
Aston Villa stars Darren Bent and Ashley Young got the goals for England in the win.
Meanwhile in other overnight friendlies, Lionel Messi again got bragging rights over CR7, scoring an injury time penalty to give Argentina a 2-1 win, Karim Benzema scored the only goal as France defeated Brazil 1-0, Spain beat Colombia by the same score, whilst Germany and Italy drew 1-1.
